The artwork:

Jan Toorop ‘’Dorpelwachters der zee’’- 1901

Toorop depicts the various life stages of humans: old (men in the foreground), motherhood, and a carefree childhood (four dancing girls).

Copy

1.  For the copy I made was inspired by the art collective ‘Superflex’. A well know work and quote of this collective is ‘’If value than copy.’’ Toorop was a famous painter, the fact that he painted this painting and his signature is under it raises up the value of the work.

I choose to steal his signature, I took a photo of it at the museum, blow it up and printed it. After that I experimented with copying the pixels form the photo I made. However, I did not finish this drawing because in my opinion the martial type did not contribute to the concept.

An enlarged photo of the signature of Toorop and the claiming of authorship of this is in my opinion in form and metrically strong enough in itself.

2. For the second copy I made I looked at the figures at the painting. I copied the old man with the hat in front of painting. On the hat that the man on the photo wears one can see to which time the image is referred to. At the same time, this hat visualizes the contrast to the present time, men no longer wear such things.

Remake:

For my remake of this painting I researched the theme of it. Toorop visualizes various stages of life in 1900 in a stereotyped way. I wondered how there live staged looked stereotyped in 2018.

Personally, I am most interested in the children who Toorop depict in his painting, playing carefree. In the past two and a half years I have been actively participating in the development a new hospital for childhood cancer. In this hospital, I see the opposite of what Toorop depict, children without a careless youth. But the remarkable thing with these children is the power they have. Often the children are way stronger than their parents.

I wanted to make an ode to these children and their families. An ode to the strength and vulnerability of a not carefree childhood.

For this ode I have been looking for various images who fit into this concept, I also wrote several texts.

(3 luik met speeltuin, raam, kind)

Ook heb ik verschillende teksten geschreven.

Final Work

‘’An ode to the strength and vulnerability of a not carefree childhood.’’

Photographed; Elisa with her mother, a great team.

Elisa has cancer, the power that this girl emanates is incredible.

In the conversation I had with Elisa and her mom the bond between was so visible. Mother and daughter, they cannot live without each other. This gives them strength but makes them vulnerable at the same time.
