Jan Toorop - Zee (Brisants de la mer du Nord)

During the introduction of the digital craft practice I was fasinadided by a work of Jan toorop. A impresionist still life of the sea close by katwijk. The work took my attention bescaus, it is hard to see where the sea ends and the sky begins. Through his colour use and the rufe brush strokes there is a lively dynamics in the painting. After standing close to the imange for more than a hour, the colour of the painting started to fasinate me. He used diffrent sades of blue and green offcours, but also pink, purple and yellow. What suprised me. For my copy I zoomed in on one peace of the painting and copy the colour pixel by pixel to get and good overview of the colour he used. After that de diffrent beween the sky and sea was even harder to see then in the original painting.

The copy reminded me of an art work from Giuseppe Stampone, why the sky belongs to every one and the earth below doesn’t. His work is inspired by the poem of “The sky belongs to everyone” by Gianni Rodari. For me this sentence was the starting point of my reschearch and my reschearch question. Where is the border between de sky and the sea. Where is the line between what you can and can not divide. Can we divide the sky, like we divide the earth? What would happend if we did? I’m starting my reschearch with a visuel work. Thrue the visuals, the estetisch and the motion I will try to capture this question. Is it possible to capture this queation in visuals, and what are the queations what come out of that visueal. I would love to continue this reschearch in the up coming quarters, with more depth in the reachersh and to approach this question also on an more theoretical and philosophical way. In the end I can combin the craft of the paint with my daily vision on the world and how we behaive on this planet.

During the proces of this rechearch I discovert how close old paintings and poem come to our daily reality. At first the seem outdeaded, but with a closer look and some reading you discover a whole world behind it. Making the connection from history to our daily live get my enery running. By using diffrent medium such as film and photography I can do my reschearch on a whole difrent level then only from internet and the books. I realy like to translate my idea’s in to image. Still, moving or a combination. Film is a new medium for me and I realy like to discover this more.
