(?) what is my craft (?)
DRAFT

Ok, the first sentence is the worst: I study illustration but do not see myself as an illustrator. This might be the sentence every Digital Craft student once wrote. But it's true. Looking at illustration it is still viewed as drawings. Traditionally illustrators have used paper or 2D surfaces to tell stories and share information. In my opinion an illustrator should not limit themselves to a medium. Illustrating is telling stories and sharing information by any medium possible. Traditionally illustrators use paper to communicatie informatie, tell stories and share ideas or statements. I think that's too narrow, for me illustration is telling that story and sharing that information, using any medium possible.

During my illustration projects I try to stretch the bounderies of the assignment to my benefit. The first time I succeeded was the second year when we had to present ourselves in a box. I put some sort of analogue printing device inside the box, the printer would print other boxes. During my internship I took some time to further prototype my initial printer.

The printer connects to the way we use technology. We live in a society where technology is not to be understood but mindlessly used. We have a lot of products in our direct surrounding that we don't understand anymore. We are rolling and scrolling withouth seeing something new. We are becoming one collective mind, the kind of mind that depends on screens for imagination.

In my work there is a pattern where I take complex devices and remake en repurpose them. The text of Robert Mc Liam Wildon: Wild At heart, an introduction to the book of Charles Freger, Wilder Mann: The Image Of The Savage, connects really nice to my work. Charles Freger made a serie of photographs about costumes of pagan rituals. The transformation of Man to beast as a central aspect.

In the end it is all about this: connecting to the material. AKA my happy place.
