This is the first received images from a constant recording

In de les hebben we met de groep gewerkt aan een 'cantenna'. De onderdelen waren al beschikbaar maar helaas kapot, door alles los te knippen en opnieuw te verbinden konden we uiteindelijk gebruik maken van de antenne. Om het te testen waren er twee kleine security camera die ook werkte op 2.4ghz. Hiermee hebben we uitgevonden wat het bereik zou zijn van de ontvanger (+/- 40m, gericht). De volgende stap zou zijn om het op verschillende locaties te testen en te zoeken naar constante opnames. Die zelfde dag nog vond ik één beeld, in de academie. Maar het was niet sterk, het verdween en ik kon hem ook niet meer terug vinden.

In verloop van tijd heb ik op verschillende locaties gezocht en gebruik gemaakt van verschillende antenna's (cantenna/router). Maar helaas niks gevonden. Om mijn kansen te vergroten moet ik zorgen dat de monitor draagbaar of vervoerbaar is in de auto. Daarnaast heb ik een kabel besteld waarmee ik mijn monitor zou kunnen opnemen inplaats van het fotograferen van het beeldscherm. Dat het een zeldzame vertoning blijkt kan misschien onderdeel worden van het project ook de reis en het proces er naar toe.

Mijn startpunt was om een camera te bouwen die de monitor beelden scant maar dat zie ik niet echt voor me in verband de grote van het materiaal. Daarnaast schat ik dat de ontvangen video zich zal afspelen in de privé ruimte.

Research

What I want to investigate is the hidden images that is constantly crossing the public space (radio). Invisible communication networks observe our surrounding and produce constant recordings. I want to make a device that let me see, there perspective and will capture it.

The research i've done too realize this project brought me to the final work method. In order to understand and see how it was done before, receiving security cameras by a babymonitor, I found on the internet video's & Form's from the 90's. Where young people in their cars driving around, searching for wifi signals. I saw a culture that has perished. So, are people still using this old technique to communicate. I liked the idea of driving around on a hunt for images and reinvent this work method for myself. Therefore, the proces is the most important part of the project

By choosing that I want to drive around with the device, I make a way to charge the monitor. At the market I bought a charger for the mobile phone. It turns 12v from the car to 5v, only i needed 12v. That's why I removed the board and linked the end of the adapter to the plug. I liked the feeling of building your own tool, the hole concept of DIY project. Seeing technologie as a material in which you can build yourself. To make it all work, I installed 'Windows Parralles' because the video grabber only worked on Windows. I had to run a CD for the program 'ArcSoft Showbiz' that was included with the Video Grabber. Which was in itself, a problem. Finally windows works but the software dit not. It can not recognize the driver. After a weekend by clicking it all startup.

I made my first test drive, with the monitor, antenna, laptop and grabber. Not sure if it all would work. I was excited to see that the charger turned on the monitor. I fixed the antenna and put down my laptop. Opened the program 'ArcSoft Showbiz' but it did not recognize the video grabber, only the cam from my laptop. So I decided in this first test drive to capture the webcam and it recoded the hole ride from my lap. That was not the only way I've documented my journey. I brought a digital camera and a analogue, to search for to the correct image language. After I had seen the pictures I have decided to uses only 'cam'footages. the imperfection of the low resolution fits into the concept and refers to 90's community. (Large Images monitor, webcam)

The assumption that early way of communicating network through radio will be most found in the south of Rotterdam was true. The first point where I drove to was 'zuidplein'. In the middel of the roundabout a image came, and a second later disappeared because you have to drive really show. Actually you have to stand still. The most images i found in streets with small stores (Berijelandselaan, Hilledijk), these streets are surrounding my house, which came out well because I had to pass by several times to capture the image quit good.

I was not satisfied with the result of photographes taken from the screen. So a day before the presentation in slash gallery, I visit simon. By downloading the software from the official website the video grabber worked. Again i did my round, where i had found footage of livingrooms, shopdoors and televison. until it got dark, this monitor has night vision so I was curious for the results.

I could not locate the source. Mabye the hidden images can only be received from one point, most of the time the landscape dit not match. These images below show you, also the surrounding of the image. the coordinates match the location of the car. One of the first idea's in Q9 was to map the positions, but this was not importent to me. Remarkable was that i found none image in the centrum of Rotterdam, only South.

When I look back on the project that i presented in slash gallery/HNI the proces was there for a small part. I know I can get more out of this and show them the bigger story. I showed the images in one languages, a documentation through the eyes of seeing machines. I want to interact and device my way to their perspective. Wardriving was a part of the concept, because of that I lost sight on the idea of making devices that photograph. What I found in the research is this project by Taiyo onorato & Nico krebs. That really motivates to build. Maybe I can start again from this idea.

the outcome does have surprised me
