Take and Make form the Museum

Project 1: Museum Of Fantastic Forgeries

Misfit-IV.png

For my first project I took inspiration from the art work of Thomas Grunfeld; name: Misfit IV.
It is a series of sculptures made from taxidermic animals.
I chose it because of the techniek, materials and specially de stories that he wants to tell us.

Misfit IV (Misbaksel IV), 1989 - 1990
Thomas Grünfeld

Biography

Toma Grunfeld 180wX249h.jpg
Thomas Grünfeld is best known for his “Misfits”—sculptures made from taxidermied animals. Grünefeld’s animals, however, subvert the typically scientific nature of taxidermy and instead represent fictional creatures: He places a pig’s head on a bird’s body in Misfit (pig/bird) (2001), or a dog’s head on the body of a calf in Misfit (doberman) (1998). The works reference German folklore, specifically children’s wolperfinger—moralizing fables about human-like animals—and as such evoke proverbial battles between real and imaginary, good and evil. (https://artsy.net/artist/thomas-grunfeld)

'Misfit series'

D4933076r.jpg ThomasGrunfeld 270.JPG Mis5.jpg
Neither historically accurate nor a restoration of anything that ever existed, Grunfeld's new trophies are assembled bij combining parts from different animals, made to looks as plausible as possible - as plausible, at least as a narwal, a stick-insect or a platypus. numbered, not titled, the Misfits look lost and vulnerable in their cabinets of german oak -'lost' because the cases are obviously too big, 'vulnerable' because of the neon lights and glass in three sides. their cole function is to be displayed like specimens, and their disturbing air of self-consciousness may derive from this fact, admittedly, they differ. While parts of a rabbit and a pheasant and the teeth of a fox give III a classical air, VI and V seem humorous and visually appealing.

Foto-mist.JPG
Grunfeld's misfits related to the Southern German Wolpertinger tradition, tall tales about improbable beasts lurking unsuspected in the wild. Neither drawings and descriptions of these animals nor concocted specimens serve to increase their credibility. Instead, they further the mythology surrounding them, a phenomenon which even moves into print with popular books such as Heim and Reiser's Mit den Wolpertiner leben or Alphons schweigert's Und es Gibt sir doch!

Thing that interested me the most of 'Misfit' is the idee of:
-Exploring the fear of genetic engineering and what it might create.
-Creating a modern mythology.
-Questioning our manipulation of nature, hybrid by combine different pieces to make a new one.

The first thing that came up on my mind was the god in Egypt and Greeks for example:

"The landscape of modern society finds us increasingly disconnected from a rich sensory experience. Smells, sounds, colours and textures are standardized, categorized and controlled in urban life; thereby eliminating all the subtle nuances and richness that exist in the nature. This contributes to a lack of imagination, communication, and spatial perception. How can we engage and stimulate our senses in our daily lives? My point of view for design is to create a sensory experience for urban life to develop the nervous system by stimulating the brain through interaction with sensory inputs."

The idee about different part in different materiaal that combine together to make a object that inspire me.
Not only the idee about materiaal that inspire me but the idee to make a teddy beer inspired me too.

Jilles de Man-product design student at WDKA the Hair project.

His concept was: uses the hair that left at the hair salon to make something that useful.

I inspired the look of the object that he makes.
The idee of the use of a living product combine with a ceramic material that inspired me a lot.

Tomoko Konoike

'Japanese artist Tomoko Konoike has created this incredible sculpture of a six-legged wolf covered in broken mirrors. The piece is part of Tomoko’s current exhibition at Gallery Wendy Norris in San Francisco in which the artist explores various crystalline structures. The exhibition, entitled ‘Earthshine’, will be on display until October 26, 2013.'
Six-legged-wolf-1.jpg Six-legged-wolf-tomoko-konoike-2.jpg
A graduate of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Konoike has come to prominence through Nihonga-styled surreal paintings and installations that often feature wolves and other regular motifs. The artist lives and works near the Akihabara area of Tokyo. Romulus, the legendary founder of ancient Rome was raised by wolves; here in Japan, there is a similar legend regarding Fujiwara no Hidehira, a medieval ruler of the Tohoku region. In general, the wolf has been accorded a benign place in Japanese folklore, a quality reflected in Studio Ghibli’s renowned 1997 film Princess Mononoke, in which the female character San rides around on a giant white wolf. Konoike is also thrilled to learn that her interviewer’s first name is a Gaelic term for young wolf, and promptly starts drawing a wolf on my meishi.

“Yes, the wolves used to be the closest animal to humans,” she enthuses. “For example, people counted numbers by using the bones of wolves. Also, wolves are related to dogs, and people are surrounded by many dogs and wolves, so it was their natural environment in ancient times.” "While some critics see danger and menace in Konoike’s wolves—a perception that may even add to the appeal of her work by lending it a certain edge—the fact is that for the artist herself, the animals have a strongly positive meaning, offering protection or serving as conduits of liberation for her own moods and feelings."

Think of the ideer of light en reflection of the object!!
the combine between animal an mens - it al the connect between them.

What is your craft? (define your discipline, method or approach)

As a fashion student, I am interested in different types of hand crafting and different aspect in the design area. I think craft for me is an
activity involving skill in making things by hand and experimenting with materials and shape. I use a lot of hand craft combine with another
technologies like laze cutting, embroideries machines to create my work.
Mode is a wider area so you are working with different knowledge in the design world. For me, I use a lot of hand crafting in the process of
designing. I use several new technology may as support in designing a collection and stuff. An example of this is: bordure machine, knitting
machine sometime laser cutting. To start designing, I am researching first to the information that I need and then find a story to work with.
Stories are great support among what I will make, and also supports the technique and materials that I will choose.

'What are the tools and media of your craft?'

I work a lot with collages as begin process. In combined with Photoshop and another adobe program I try to find the shape or
silhouette and then use the body to find a good shape. I work a lot with hand in the process of design, besides I used various
modern technologies as support. For creating 3D work I used the ceramic workplace. Polyester hard and silicone are the materials
that I often used in combination with other natural materials.
In this century, a lot of new technology and possibilities are exists. One of the most used technologies on this moment is laser cute
and 3D printing. Live in this era and get in touch with all of it, I try to envol myself to lean more about that technologies to use in my design later.
Most of all, laser cut ten has been use a lot in fashion. For example prints that makes by laser cutting, fabric that is made by the use
of laser cutting machine en lace. For me, the possibilities of the machine and what they can do inspires me a lot. Besides laser cutting machine,
3D printer machine is often used in fashion. Iris van Herpen is one of the famous designers on this moment that uses 3d printer for her design.

and she has her 3D printed dresses named as one of the best 50 best inventions of 2011 by time magazine.

What are the borders of this practice? (What new media technologies have arisen / what is its future)

For me, I think new trends are the result of cultural shifts, cyclical attitudes and lifestyle changes,
the worlds of technology and fashion design have begun to merge.
Smart textiles and wearable technology are becoming widely used and recognized by the fashion industry.
As a result, there is growing consumer interest in using smart textiles in fashion, giving designers new methods with which they can grab
attention and stand out from competitors.
There will be a lot of changing/movement, improvement in the future. Because they put a step further every year, everything is possible.
Thought 3D machine has been use a lot lately I think in the future we just need to sit down and relax on the sofa and let print everything we need at home.

Connect to a historical discourse and/or give concrete examples of contemporary practitioners

Think of new technologies or designers who use a lot of it, there are a lot of them out there.
One of the designers that inspires me is Alexander McQueen.
He often uses different technology for his new colection's presentation.
He used in 2006 a hologram on the catwalk to show Kate Moss in his dress.

Alexander-McQueenKate-Moss.jpg 121688.jpg

About 3D printing is Irris van Herpen one of the influential at this time.
Her dresses are often made with large scale 3D printing.
She works with all kinds of materials and new techniques like the 3D printer but also the laser cutter.

Another designer that use a lot of new technologie in his work is Hussein Chalayan. He programes his dress and
make them move, change the shape. He draws heavily on technology to revolutionize the form and function of clothing.
His work imbues garments with architectural, environmental, and technological principles; and reveals the extent to which
fashion, interiors and architecture can be truly integrated in design.

Hussein-Chalayan-Before-Minus-Now-Collection-Summer-2000-2.jpg Husschal.jpg Husschal.jpg

Define your position of your practice in relation to newer technologies.

For my own work I find that modern technology take a big important part in fashion now. The new way of designing plays an imported roll in all
design aspects and not only in fashion. Be honest I didn’t use a lot of new technology in my work yet in my work. But with this minor I really want

In my work, I use a lot of time to thing of a way to create new fabric that makes of different materials after combine them together. I want to use
