Bad luck brian is a prototype loser and he gets himself in really awkard situation where he couldn't do anything about it to change it. It all started with 1 post on reddit by a friend of bad luck Brian. Bad luck brian is actually Kyle. A funny boy in highschool who made a really funny and ugly photo on purpose. He wanted to give everybody a good laugh and to annoy his teachers. the first post about his DUI is a joke on reddit by his best friend. Whitin a few hours it goes viral. But not because of this post (it only gets 5 thumbs up) but by a remake which gets a few thousand thumbs up. After that it goes crazy. A new website comes up which makes it really easy to make your own meme. This has contributed to Bad luck Brians succes. After a few months it gets its revival in popularity because marketingblog.com shows a new one. After this Bad luck brian can make his money by selling shirts and contributing in commercials. He likes it a lot and starts even his own youtube channel. But that is not as funny as the quick memes. his popularity soon drops.
As a viewer you first feel a lillte bit hold back. Becasue you want to laugh because it's funny. But it also feels like bullying because it feels like you are making fun of this guy. Maybe he doesn't like all this and he feels really bad about it. You are making fun of someone. In this case it is totally okay because he likes the attention and the jokes because the making of the photo was a joke in itself.
it is also interesting how this one meme had influenced his life dramatically.
There are still new bad luck brians coming up. people are reacting on eachother. Sometimes the meme is tweaked with different caracters which is possible because of the big reach this guy has. Someone 3D-printed the meme which turned out to be even more ugly which became a new meme. So the chain goes on.

This is a song about love and The Netherlands and very populair with milions of views. So Amsterdam people did a remake on this song in which they make fun of Rotterdam people and their dialect.
Rotterdam people got annoyed and did a remake on the Amsterdam song in which they make fun of AMsterdam people. Once it's clear to the singer that the beautiful girl is from Amsterdam, he spits on the ground and stops singing. The song is over.

Both songs got millions of views and a lot of other remakes were launched after this. Both very professional and amateuristic. But this meme is only understandable for a small group of people. You have to speak dutch and to know both the dialect AND you have to know the natural rivalary between those two cities. So al lot of people get excluded but that also makes the conncetion between the included ones stronger.

We made the ‘Rotterdamse Vertalert’. Our main goal is to connect people through complaining in Rotterdam dialect and slang. Because Rotterdam people like to complain, we invite them with the question: ‘What to complain about today?’ If you type a Dutch complaint in our machine, you will get the translation in Rotterdam language.
Rotterdam people also like to share their complaints, so they can spread the word on social media. We invite them by the sentence: ‘Gedeelde leedt is halve leedt, pleurt je vertaalde zin er effies bij dan. Jatochniettan! Just like ‘Tatta’s be like’ this is only understandable for a small subculture. This exclusion makes the connection between the included ones stronger.
So: Effies een potje zeiken in het Rotterdams, dat bekt zo lekker.

TRANSLATION As a group, We started with ‘Tatta’s be like’, 'Bad luck Brian' and ‘Praat Nederlands met me’. And we came up with the theme: translation. Because you need to know the context of a meme to fully understand it. For example, you need to know the dutch language and the dutch culture t onderstand tatta’s be like. So you need to translate. We made 3 works about that.

„Whatever be like“ deals with our situation of arriving in Rotterdam and getting to know the meme “Tattas be like” for the first time. Interesting about this meme is, that they are making fun of a culture and at the same time the phenomenon emerges from within the culture. Therefore this meme is an insider joke. We were thinking about the possibility to identify with cultural stereotypes and thought about typical situations from our own cultures. At the same time the question of how a meme appears, develops and is translated to different contexts is important. We would like to create an analogue platform for memes and invite the audience to draw, write or leave comments on sticky notes about something they find (stereo-)typical about themselves or their culture. Within the three days of the exhibition we would to see and show how the drawings and comments develop and if they are influenced by each other. Creating an analogue meme.
