Printing
What is my definition of 'printing'?
In my opinion printing means pressing material onto or into a surface that leaves a mark behind.
This can be permanent or temporary depending on the materials and surfaces that are used to print.
Gouden Handjes
For some research I went to 'Het Nieuwe Instituut' to a so called 'Thursday Night Lecture' and this one was going to be about craft. The lecture was called ' Gouden Handjes' where different artists were lecturing about their ideas about craft and projects that they thought were relevant to craft. Three lectures really inspired me that night, Studio Spass , From Form and Sooji Lee.
These three artists gave me all some inspirational advice during their lectures, I wrote down some key features/moto's ;
Studio Spass : " Go big, go bold use whatever you find."
From Form : " Back to the field." (From digital form to craft & from analog to digital).
Sooji Lee : " One's attitude shaped by endless repetition"
Sooji inspired em the most by what she told, she was talking about that everybody can design nowadays using the Adobe programs.
She was asking herself and us the same question: " Am I training myself to fit the tools or can I train a tool to fit myself? I think this is the reason for craftsmen, don't try to adapt to a tool, let that tool adapt to you or make your own tool.
Why I Make
Introduction
I chose ' Digitalcraft' as a practice because I really like to work with my hands. I really fancy older printing techniques which I had already used multiple times for my Illustration projects. Although I fancy older crafts I do like working with newer techniques as well, I try to explore as much techniques as possible within the school. At some point I would really like to combine these older and newer techniques together within a project. (I thought at first that this practice was all about this point of view.)
When we were introduced to the 4 disciplines within Digitalcraft I thought that 'printing' was the least interesting one. Probably because I thought that I already know a lot about these techniques and wanted to do something totally different.
But after thinking about it and just start to work on concepts I came up with something interesting to work with.
