Making is connecting

Hey there! My name is Dalit and I study illustration. I like print making a lot. What I really like about illustration is the fact that you can tell stories, by imagery. In my work I discuss themes such as sexuality, politics, feminism and I also work a lot in assignments especially for music events, concerts or festivals. I'm also very interested in fashion, like creating patterns for shirts and creating my own brand, I already experimented with that and still am. What I like about illustration is that so many things in this business is possible. You don't need to stuck to one thing. I have many interests. But my specialisation is definitely political illustration and creating art for music events.

Why I create?

I create images, I'm a print maker. With my images I like to tell stories. Illustration to me is telling stories with images. In my work I'm very political. My work is bold, fresh and young.

EXAMPLES

Historical example

For my historical example I chose the lino cut technique. What I fond interesting about this technique and also what I really liked is that the carving you made could use multiple times, it can be used as a stamp. A design is cut in to cork. When I was busy with the printing I totally forgot about the fact that when you make the illustration it flips, so when I incorporated some typography you could read it backwards. Also linocut interested me, since it is an old illustration technique. But what I found rather disappointing is that you loose a lot of detail in your illustration, or maybe lets put it different, I had a lot of trouble making a very detailed illustration. But it was a nice experiment. I made a print of Erdogan and Hitler making out.

==Shared example==

We as a group needed to make one piece. Using the CNC milling fraser machine. What I really liked about this technique is that you don't need to necessary work flat. You can work 3D as well. The machine is on the contrary kinda limited in it's way, because it can only work from one angle, which is from above. So you need to think about this when you make your model. For creating my 3D model I used a 3D program SCULPTRIS. Very easy 3D program, it's like molding clay but then with your computer. I sculpt a kinda weird alien looking head in foam, as you can see a lot of detail is missing, but it still came out properly. I kinda got my inspiration from things that were laying around, there was a moon landscape, so therefor I created the alien head. Also I'm drawn to weird looking creepy things, so it came natural to me. First we wanted to connect our objects by making a windmill, but now we're still thinking if that is the correct way.

New Skill Try Out

This is the first time I ever made a stencil by carving. Or ever that I made a stencil. I though this technique was very interesting. Also the philosophy behind skating triggered me a lot. I thought it would be cool to spray paint the wave I created from another deck to put this on a deck and leave this one it's shape.

Comparative example

Making a stencil out of paper. I used the shape of the wave I earlier created as my stencil. I cut out the shapes I didn't wanted to use. This technique is for me very interesting, since I'm a print maker, this was again another way of seeing how carving could influence my print making skills. I spray painted the print on paper and on another skateboard deck. It was very difficult since the paper lining is very thin to not rip the stencil apart. Also when spray painting on it, there is still a lot of movement going on. so it is difficult in places where the paper is covered to not get paint underneath it. But I see it as a charm of this technique it makes it more rough.

Push it to the limit

My comparative example is a shape of a wave I created out of an old skateboard deck. I did this with a jigsaw, later on I engraved a print on it with the lasercutter. I read in an article from Noupe, (Art on Board: Skateboarding and the Artistic Sub-Culture) That skateboarding came officially from surfing, but when the waves were gone the surfers used boards to ride the city, so that they could ride the city as their waves.

Final Artefact

I made two skateboard decks, one with a lasercut illustration print that represent 3 woman who are (in my opinion) representative for woman today in the skate scene. So woman in that world have something that represents them.
