Copy Culture Debate
The Digital Craft & Open Design programs of the Willem de Kooning Academy invite you to the first of a series of debates surrounding the issues of maker culture.
This debate questions authorship and authenticity in the age of digital fabrication. While practice of copying, ripping, and remixing is not new or something that has emerged with digital culture -- it has been inherent to art and design practice for centuries -- our newer tools reproduce existing material culture has shifted our concepts of authorship, ownership, and property.
The Belgian design practice Unfold kick off the discussion by laying out the possibilities, consequences, as well as the politics of cnc technologies. Studio Maaike Roozenburg explores the value in bringing museal objects back into a 'use' context. Commonplace Studio talks of the reactivation historical artefact through the creation of 'open narratives' and Peter Gorgels discusses openness as a strategy in the institutional context of the Rijksmuseum.
The short talks and discussion will start at 18:00 and will be moderated by Roel Roscam Abbing.
