What's the Point of Android Skins?

Our readers scream about them every time we write about a new Android phone. We grumble about them as loud as anybody. It's enough to make you wonder just why the hell manufacturers keep using skins at all. So, we asked them.

Hardware

Phone Story

Phones Story ".. is an educational game about the dark side of your favorite smart phone. Follow your phone's journey around the world and fight the market forces in a spiral of planned obsolescence."

Google's Iron Grip on Android

Newstweek ".. is a device for manipulating news read by other people on wireless hotspots."

Android and the political economy of the mobile internet

"This paper examines how and why Google in developing Android, the popular mobile operating system, has strategically adopted particular open source practices, but ignored others. It explores how through these practices, the corporation has been able to cultivate and control a vast mobile Internet ecology. [...] This paper shows how these corporate strategies, which combine intricate technical, legal, and political–economic maneuvering, shape the rapidly growing mobile Internet, and, consequently, have far–reaching economic and cultural consequences."

The DIY Cellphone is a working (albeit basic) cellphone that you can make yourself. It can make and receive phone calls and text messages, store names and phone numbers, and display the time.

Jailbreaken / Rooten

Voorbeelden: http://replicant.us/ (FLOSS) http://www.cyanogenmod.org/

Bibliotecha

Bibliotecha '[...] is a software stack that allows a small community to maintain and distribute a collection of texts. It is based on the idea that a community might have a 'canonical' collection of texts that need to be easily accessed by the members. It uses a Raspberry Pi to serve books over a local wifi hotspot. Once connected to the hotspot any webbrowser can be used to search the collection and retrieve books from it. Members of the community can also add books to the collection using their webbrowser.
