Written Assignment
1. What is my craft?
My craft is fashion. I always start with a feeling, a personal story what gives me certain kind of strong emotions: really sad, heavenly happy, etc. Something I can imagine a whole world around it. I draw my feelings, sketch atmospheres and I search for any excisting images which fit my theme. It is for me an easy way to start my project what can also isnpire me to go deeper into my project. From there I’m really looking for materials which can inspire me, how I can use and manipulate them and how I can give them my personal twist. When I gathered and made all the pieces to make my object, I put them together like a puzzle. I work in a molding way.
2. What are the tools and media of my craft?
I think everything could be your tool or media. Of course there are some general tools like the sewing machine, knitting machines, etc. But you can actually choose anything you’d like. 3D printers are an easy example. But it all depends on how far you want to push your limits. For myself I really like to work by hand and experiment with different kinds of materials. As example I worked with wool, dried flowers, sugar, screen printing, polyurethane foam and drawings, buttons, patches and leftovers. All made by hand.
3. What are the borders of this practice?
Personally I think the 3D printer, and not only for fashion, is the future. There are so many possibilities with the 3D printer. At the moment it is already possible to print models of certain organs and the next step is to actually print living tissue. I think this is so bizarre, because there are barely any boundries left in 3D printing. Soon everything can be printed with the 3D printer. And not only everything can be printed, i think everyone can print anything. The value of art could loose his value, because every retard can make anything he wants. I don’t want to say I’m against technologies, because sometimes you truly need to use it to make certain objects and technologies can make the proces of making something easier. But on the other hand that also could be the problem, it’s easier for everyone to make something with technology. And as soon as it’s accesable for everyone, why would anyone buy something from anyone when you can make it yourself. So I think if you want to be an artist you really have to look for a way to distinguish yourself and find a balance between technologie and handcraft. Let’s imagine everyone has a 3D printer, lasercutter, or whatever: technologies aren’t, by that time, the way anymore to distinguish yourself. So you should really find a way between technologie and handcraft to make it not accesible for everyone. And of course everyone could also copy handcrafts, but sometimes it’s just easier to buy it. The threshold could be higher because the technique is less accesable / easier to copy when it’s not produced by a machine.
4. Example of contemporary practitioners
An example of a practitioner of a fashion designer who uses 3D printing and really inspires me is Iris van Herpen.
This is an example of what Iris van Herpen made with the 3D printer, the skeleton dress. She made it a few seasons ago, and it became
a pretty famous and revolutionary design for fashion, but i think in a while when everyone can use a 3D printer and gets how 3D printing works, it isn’t anymore. I think there will be hundreds of copies of this work. Of course the design is pretty, but it’s special because the design is made in a revolutionary way. As soon it isn’t a new way of making things anymore, it isn’t special anymore. The design will dissapear between all the look a likes.
5. Define your position of your pratice in relation to newer technologies
Normally i do everything by hand, even sewing and attaching things to my clothes, so i’m really on the start of trying new technologies for fashion. The reason why i chose to work with technologies is because it’s the year 2014. This is how the world works: with technology and it’s important to not stay behind. As an artist you should stand open for all kind of influences around you, let yourself inspire by everything that is, in stead of working with a tunnel vision set of mind. That’s why I really want to learn how to work with technology.
I do think it’s important to use technology as the tool that can provide you of what you need, not the tool to make what you want to make.
I don’t really like to use technology because I think a lot of objects loose their roughness, like little flaws, when you make it with technology. You loose the coincidence and character of what can happen with a material when you make a mistake for example. But that is the idea I got about technology, I don’t know if that’s true since i got barely any experience with working with machines.
