Futurocity:
I went to the talks on Futuorcity in Witte de Witte, the talk by Diuglas Coupland really inspired me to think about the future of information.
Lost in translation: Every technology that takes over the next loses the meaning of the previous – lossy. Nothing seems more certain than change Driverless cars – they make us forget that better public transport is what we really need. The future is about forgetting history – the future becomes a eternal repeat of the past. Epubs make us forget that better libraries is what we need Hand gestures, everything is going back to humanity away from digital. Archiving and sharing information.
What do you make?
I work with a social context, my ambitions are to communicate and help people understand the world they live in, and eventually to inspire.
What is your topic of interest? Explain a past/current topic or what you wish to explore)
Experience a distopian future.
What would the world be like with commodified information?
Aaron Swatrz Open access manifesto - Copyright laws online
Freedom of speech online
An extreme look into what the future could become where the internet is becoming more and more commodified
Analoge is moving to digital - everything is moving online.
Print is not dead.
new interactivity within the traditional poster
Control of information - raising awareness
Relationship with analog and digital
What is your medium?
Auduino Kinect
New direction
I will now be exploring the Medium is the Massage and the ideas contained within through a series of interactive posters. These posters will explore how analogue turns to digital but without losing the beauty of the analoge - 'Print is not dead' Along with a open course exploring Bibliotheca - a ebook library accessible via wifi I plan on making a series of posters exploring the future as analoge turns to digital whilst also making people aware of Bibliotheca. - as this is their biggest problem - nobody is uploading books because nobody knows it exists!
The Posters
I am unsure yet whether I want to use arduino or not. I am considering the use of thermochromic ink to express some ideas i've been having about how I could represent the shift of analogue to digital in the context of print.
I have experimented with Makey Makey as a simplified alternative to using arduino (which I am not very comfortable with yet - despite doing an open course on it). However, I dont like the idea of the poster being attached to a computer or a laptop.
Alternatively I could combine a Makey Makey with a raspberry pi, since the interactions I want from it are pretty basic I think this would be a good option.
I have also experimented with soft touch buttons using fabrics and foil but I think this looks messy and unprofessional, Instead I want to use Bare Conductive ink for my poster.
Some photos of my experiments:
I just spoke to Thomas, I think the simpliest option is to use thermochromic ink along with an arduino for one poster for the poster that make sound I should connect a raspberry pi to a makey makey which will be working from scratch.
The Context and the purpose:
Why am I creating this poster?
Bigger theme = Analoue to Digital, the future of books, the future of print
Bibliotheca:
An opensource, network based library which
Challenge: Nobody knows about the bibliotheca, how can we create awareness for it and encourage people to add books to it and educate them why.
1) Protest poster (slogan ideas)
Books aren't dead
Knowledge is power
Steal these books
Using Thermochromic ink and conductive ink.
Question: Does conductive ink heat up significantly enough?
Answer: Experiment!
2) Bibliotheca information hyperlink poster (to inform how they can upload their books)
Series of conductive ink buttons which link to various pages online
Bigger concept
- The internet is becoming more and more useless due to the overproduction of data
Its also becoming less personal, less human - e.g. twitter bots that automatically produce heaps of content with no obvious value)
- Solution: Create a hyperlink poster which has on it the key websites online.
The source of all information lies in this button: - it takes you to Google.
Poster designs
I am trying to make a poster that encourages students to share their books with others, also raise awareness of the wider picture that Aaron Swartz brought up in his life's works. That is to say that information is being commodified online (be that through Amazon's Kindle or large data lockers such as JStor.) This commodification of books means that students cannot afford the necessary means to further our scientific expansion. - Whos to say that the cure for cancer isn't locked inside a young boy in Africa who cannot afford the means to further his education.
I want the poster to combine analogue with digital - I want it to look as if it is digital.

Final concept
The poster will print the instructions on how to upload books to the bibliotheca using a Raspberry Pi, Conductive ink, Makey-Makey and a Coupon Printer.
Wow! I had so much trouble finding the coupon printer paper - I had to go all the way to The Hague in the end!
"Tests and experiments"
Since I began this project I have been attending the Bibliotheca open course in which I have been learning how to use Raspberry pi in the context of making your own bibliotheca.
Update: I have just got the python script for printing the bibliotheca instructions
I have been experimenting with the Makey Makey and the Raspberry pi, haven't yet had the time to screen print the poster - might have to paint it on by hand.
This week I have been working on making the poster work, using the makey makey and the coupon printer, as well as the Raspberry pi.
I have got the python code from Yoana for the printing of the bibliotheca instructions so now it is a matter of putting it all together.
I have applied the ink and I am ready to set up my poster.
