Position Paper (G.Pombo)
Goretti Pombo Draft Position Paper Digital Crafts November 6th, 2018
What is your craft? (define your discipline, method or approach)
The primary drives in my work have been my instincts and emotions. Therefore, my work embodies the manifestation of my subconscious. However, the nature of my subconscious is disruptive. It is drawn to conflict and begs to put images from opposing natures together. I exploit these instincts and try not to probe too deeply into the why’s because there is a certain kind of allure to not knowing. Thus, the mystery becomes the object of fascination
Sketches develop from an automatism to draw surrealist type forms and situations. This eventually leads to a basis for paintings or three-dimensional sculptural work. These sketches are heavily influenced by the atmosphere of music, which becomes a guide for this automatic reflex to sketch.
All of this comes combined with the fact that most of my work is born from my attempt to satiate my materialistic desires. Therefore, an urgency persists to keep creating. Ultimately, my work passively offers a chance to be bewildered by form and sensibility to form.
2. What are the borders of this practice? (what new media technologies have arisen / what is its future of the field)
3. Connect to a historical discourse and give concrete examples of contemporary practitioners.
Ever since I found out about the Surrealist movement by André Breton in 1924, I was very infatuated with it. I loved the fact that there were artists using their subconscious to produce art. Nowadays, the art world values concept, thought and reasoning more than ever. While I still find myself drawn to absurdity and instincts.
4. Define the position of your practice in relation to newer technologies. As a part of the Digital Craft practice, I feel very restricted regarding my poor applied knowledge of technology. Therefore my position is very deficient when it comes to newer technologies.
