TvH Reflection
. Reflection .
This semester wasn’t an easy one. A friend asked me if I made a mistake for switching to digital craft, instead of staying at hacking. I think not. I chose to switch because digital craft seemed a better fit, considering I want to continue as a Fashion Tech designer. And during the minor I’ve learned a lot of things about myself, personally and as a designer. I’ve been able to define my craft and now have a clear vision where I want to go with my own company. And in hindsight it was good to be confronted again by my mental health, basically I know what not to do.
My knowledge of electronics and coding skill has grown exponentially. I designed all the circuits I’ve experimented with and the only one needed a component swapped, because obviously not all tiny black things with some pins are the same. Coding wise I have been very good at copy and pasting, but now I’ve taken the time to research things like Delay versus Millis. Researching the Millis action has made it possible for me to make the Shadow play backpack without any help with coding. If you’d ask me at the beginning of the semester if I’d ever be able to write proper code, I’d say “I’ll hire someone” but now I see with the right resources I will eventually be able to do it myself.
One of the most important thing I’ve learned is that I love traditional textile techniques and I should never let them go. When thinking of Fashion Tech I also thought of making parts or entire garments with techniques like laser cutting and 3d printing, but these techniques are not for me. This will also be a way I can differentiate myself from other Fashion Tech designers by clearly choosing for knitting, felting and lace making to make my designs.
