Classy Relaxy – Floris Beuger
With this chair the designer plays with the power of forcing. The user is forced to sit in a certain way, because of the weird crossed shape. In stead of sitting really sexy the user of this chair looks elegant, classy and chic. It’s a direct transformation of the ‘Sexy Relaxy Chair’ designed by Richard Hutten. The concept is changed, but some essential elements stayed the same for the transformation. Richard Hutten wants users to become creative when they use his products. That was also the task while designing a transformation. Besides that, the way of producing remained the same. Richard Hutten always creates products that are reproducible.
As written before, the user of this chair looks elegant, classy and chic. The shape is chosen for a certain reason. Not only is it very pleasant to sit with your legs crossed, it’s also reflecting on the lifestyle of women nowadays. It’s an ode to a more conservative time, where men used to open doors for woman and talking to each other on a first name basis was still unacceptable. Sitting on this chair means respecting classic etiquette and a woman shall be addressed with ‘lady’.
The designer’s opinion about this case is considerably more liberal and tolerant than outlined above. ‘Every person should be able to sit in a way that fits their needs and desires and feel comfortable about it’. Nonetheless, Beuger believes that certain elements of existing etiquettes features meaning and importance. He thinks that some of these can add value to daily lives and either contain a message or function as learning material.

Sexy Relaxy and its contrafactual past
The sexy relaxy is a chair which makes you sit in a certain way. The chair forces you to spread your legs. By this, it also forces women to open their legs, which creates a sexual tension. This chair was inspired by the chairs back in the days, specially designed for little girls.
Back in the days, it was necessarily for women to sit in a certain way. Their sitting posture was connected to a certain social rule. They had to sit straight up, legs crossed over each other and their chin up.
A lot of mothers had trouble to cope with teaching their little girls to sit in the right way. They simply did not do it right at all. Luckily for the mothers their little girls were being sent to girls school, where they learned all the important stuff they should know when becoming a house mom by their selves one day. Knitting, cooking, cleaning, but also sitting in the right way. The schools for girls had a smart way to learn these girls to sit in the right way. They developed a chair, which forces them to sit in a certain way. Their back had to be straight up, their chin should be up in the sky, their legs crossed over each other and their arms resting on their lap. The chair made sure of it all, and by doing all the work in this chair, they learned how to sit in the right way.
Sexy Relaxy and its radical future - by Goretti Pombo
What if in the future, the only chair being produced is the 'Sexy Relaxy'?? The one who sits will be forced to always sit with his/her legs open. And what happens if this person has a short skirt on and does not want to show off their genitalia?? Use the Censored Underwear! Underwear that keeps your genitalia hidden:
The pattern on the prototype of this underwear is a pixelated version of a woman's genitalia. I experimented with different patterns of 'censoring' and then I chose one. Using the Sublimation printer, I printed the chosen pattern on fabric and created the prototype.
