Chosen artefact

The artefact I chose is this handfan originated from around the 18TH century, by anonymous. Four things I found very intriguing about this artefact is its layers, dynamics, colors and cultural meaning. I decided to focus on the two last elements during this course. From the sixteenth century onwards the fan was used in fashionable society as a means of communication. It is a disciplined communication device that has been used in the past and can be seen as the predecessor of a texting device.

My Copy

As the Boijmans has more than 40 Handfans in its collection I decided to pick one of them on intuition,
by choosing the colors that intrigued me the most. For my copy I selected 50 colors of this fan, and turn them into a CMYK fan.

The Ladies Telegraph folding fan, 1798, is regarded as a conversation fan.

My transformation

The first Idea I had on making a transformation was to create a detailed communication fan, by displaying the alphabet on it. After some research I quickly found that this had already been done, centuries before me (see image above). Also, we already have plenty media nowadays to communicate through with text and visuals. I decided to focus on the fan etiquette, which is the ‘language’ in which you can converse with simple movements of the fan. The essence of etiquette is: taking into account the feelings of others and the customs in a society, in all situations in which people interact with each other. The messages conveyed in fan etiquette, are those of love.

central questions Can traditional fan etiquette be added to a contemporary object? Which contemporary object should this be?

Why worth pushing? Bringing people together, setting boundaries where needed. Creating love stories.

Design proposal – ‘Fanny Pack Etiquette’ When visiting events a contemporary object I see women wear, is the fanny pack. The fanny pack has a rich history but is mostly known as a very functional wearable, a small bag you can wear close to your body. This makes it easy to use it as a contemporary etiquette tool. My design proposal is the following video with which I hope to connect people in a comical way.

What is my craft?

Inspired by my background as a dancer, movement is a theme that regularly appears in my visual work. Initially the dynamics and stratification of the fan interested me. Also the way in which the whole is made up of fragments. But the thing that interested me the most is a story connected to the object: ‘The Fan Etiquette’ . This is the ‘language’ in which you can converse with simple movements of the fan. In my output I combined moving image with still typographic compositions. I used film as a medium inspired by the fragments of a handfan. During my study here at WDKA I want to explore the movement theme further in means of technologies I can connect to it.
