TOOLS AND TECH PROJECT
Matching interests: digitalization of making patterns/ dessins/ drawings/ reliefs This brought us to 2,5d printing/ length and latitude ashes X and Y Carving in material/ put something on a material like glue.
Material options/ Glue/ sand/ salt/ powder/ carbon paper (which is actually manual copying)/ stones/ ceramics.
Are we speaking about randomness in case of technology? Or is everything programmed impossible to see as coincidence? \ Examples: David Derksen Studio/ Design plates with geometric lines/ Oscillation plates
Janny Schmitz and Daan de Haan
'Waddenzee' by Studio Maarten Kolk and Guus Kusters.
Personal interests/ GEOLOGY/ Can you map certain arias and show the diversity and esthetics of different heights and colors? Giving maps another function. Geologica book. Coming up ......
PRESENTATION
We started the project by setting the assignment to our own hands. The idea of a battle with fighting robots wasn’t really for us… So we came up with the idea of drawings, patterns and the multiple possibilities that came along. We had a lot of difficulties with getting started and the choosing of THE idea. We had so many options but most of them weren’t realistic with the tools and knowledge we had. We thought about drawing options like scratching, painting and fading, like using sand and drawing in it.
For that we used bristlebot robots to stimulate these random illustrations. Making the botz wasn’t that hard, we looked at the tutorial and made our own bot, very quick with a lot of enthusiasm. Soon after that we experimented with different surfaces on a lightbox like sand, tea, ink, charcoal and more. The tea and sand worked best because the light got a change to shine trough. The bot created a vibration in the sand and the tea and a really nice illustration. It started to create aesthetic circles. We wanted to connect the two bots that we had made to create more dynamic and more movement. We also wanted to upgrade the bots because it could look better and we wanted to make them stronger and more stable. We created these bots, they are stronger because of two brushes and the bodies that we made around the brushes. We have connected the bots with each other by using a iron piece that we have made. This piece leaves place for the bots to move in every way because of the space in between the iron. The bots look like they are competing with each other, dancing around each other and working together. The tell each other where to go and this results in a illustration that appears by coincidence.
We are happy with the results but we had hoped that the spinning around in circles would happen more, like it was during the test. We think this doesn’t happen anymore because of the fact that we upgraded the simple bots in to the double brushes.
For the lightbox we decided to work with Christmas leds. The first led we have tried was with a adapter. We did an experiment with the voltage and we also discover that this cube was the answer why the leds gets equally power. And that was not what we had expected, we thought that was there for the electrical wiring. We got a little bit of help and us was told that it worked better and was less risky if we worked with leds with batteries. So we bought a brother and sister for the discarded green leds and start over again. First we have checked the voltage and we discovered that the battery leds also worked as a single led. This was very positive because that mean that we can make parallel rows and groups besides the amount of the group. By the green leds we had to calculate the amount of the group otherwise the hole led row wouldn’t work anymore. The wiring of the led that we eventually use if of the discards green leds.
