CRT Interfaces

Starting point

Within my Major I researched into the material pixels. When the assignment of the black box was proposed. I thought it was really interesting to research and dive deeper into old cathrode tube televisions. I was interested in how the mechanics of it worked and how images were build up. I was also highly intrigued by 'dead' pixels and the way it stands out from the other pixels.

The question upon acting was if i was able to create these dead pixels, and after looking at the blue print of how a CRT television works I decided to cut through some of the electron wires that are making up the image. Of course only after de-charging the device properly (!!!!).

By cutting through selected electron wires different images started to appear on the screen. Firsly, a very beautiful image build up from some sort of spiral 300px Opening5.jpg

I started exploring more by cutting more wires and see what it did to the image appearing on the sreen.

In the end I cut through too many wires which made the image a flat line, still kind of beautiful. And so by reappropriating the crt television it was used to create imagery build up from its own interface, but not what the television was meant for. It produced static imagery that can be approached as graphical paintings/drawings.
