Stations

Next to the infrastructure services such as the wiki, the open source domain working stations come in two flavours:

Operating systems

Single boot GNU/Linux machines

A few machines, PC desktops, with a GNU/Linux operating system with root access given to the students.

Suggested OS: Crunchbang GNU/Linux configured with the deb-multimedia repository. It is a Debian based operating system and therefore benefit from the Debian and the deb-multimedia package repositories that contains plethora of software useful for art, music and design.

Added separately, because not part of the repositories:

• Ardour 3
• Firefox Aurora
• Processing
• Arduino

The list of software is limited in this section simply because it is so trivial to install and remove software on Debian GNU/Linux that the list of free and open source software used within the course will be listed in the course material itself.

Single boot Mac OS machines

While Mac OS is most likely to be the default OS to boot on the stations, it comes pre-installed with VirtualBox to run a virtual GNU/Linux machine with the same software specs as above.
