Design your card
You can download the file "montage visite 9x v+a.indd" and "business_template.indd" on one of the two standing Macs.

Or create a file size 8,5 x 5,5 cm.
This is a standard business-cards size. If you are creating a different size card, you'll need to adjust the measurement below.

Use Bleed
If you need a colour or picture for the background, make it larger than the dimensions of the business card. It will need to go 3-5 mm over the edges of the card.
In InDesign you can define at least 3 mm bleed.

Crop Marks
When exporting your file to PDF set Crop Marks and Bleed on 3mm.
If you look at the PDF, you can see the crop marks.

Place multiple cards on one A4
Next step is to put 9 cards on one A4.
Make a new A4 InDesign document and place the card's PDF on the page [file>place].
Go to Edit> Step and Repeat and multiply your card by creating a grid with 3 columns and 3 rows.
Put the offset on 91mm horizontal and 61mm vertical. That is the size of the card + 6mm on both sides of Bleed and Crop marks. Check the Preview button and click OK.

Export the new file with 9 cards as a pdf. This time do not use the bleed and crop-marks.
When you have a double-sided card, make sure everything is centred on both sides of the card.

When you print, choose short edge flipping when your document is landscape and long edge flipping for portrait documents.

Tips
The more precise you work, the easier it is to cut later on.
Keep in mind that 1 millimeter is a LOT on a business card and almost nothing on an A0 (A-zero) poster. So do not put text too close to the edge and do not try to align something on the front with the back. Printers have a tolerance of a few millimeters with printing on both sides.

Printing
Choose a nice, thick paper (200-300.) and put at least 10 sheets in the multipurpose tray.
Print one sample and cut it first to ensure you did not make a mistake. When it is okay, print some more.
10 sheets of paper will give you 90 business cards.
For an extended explanation on how to print double-sided see our guide.

Cutting
Cut your sheets on the big cutting machine.
Keep one sheet apart to measure: Start measuring from the edge of the paper to the crop-marks that are the most far away. Type this distance in on the grey keys on the machine and press '=' twice. This is your first cut. When the border is cut off, measure the distance for the next cut. That would be the three cards on the right. For the next cut (6 mm less, that is the space between the cards) you can type in –0.6 and twice the = button. After this, you do –8.5 cm and – 0.6. For the last row, type in 8.5 and '=' twice.

Now you have three strokes with three cards on each. Make one big pile and cut the cards to 85 x 55 mm.

Making a printable PDF

In general, save or export as a PDF/X a:2001 file.

To print a magazine, your document should have a total amount of pages which is decidable by four. So the smallest magazine is 8 pages, then comes 12, 16, 20, 24 and so on. The Canon c600i printer can staple up to 24 pages, that is 6 sheets. Do not staple more, to prevent a major paper jam.

When using InDesign, export your document as a PDF/X a:2001. This PDF integrates all fonts and pictures, makes it CMYK and flattens it.

For magazines always save as separate pages. The Fiery Command Workstation software on our macs, PrintL and PrintR, will automatically order your pages if you use the “booklet” option. Page 1 should be your cover. If you are gluebindig your magazine or book, you don't have to use the booklet option. Just print double-sided. Then make a separate cover, where the front is on the right side, and the back of your cover on the left side. If you have a lot of pages (more than 20) also make a spine in your design for the cover.

No InDesign?

If you made your magazine in another programme than InDesign, you should convert it to a PDF/X a:2001. You can do that if you open your PDF in Acrobat. Go to edit > Preflight . Go to PDF/X and choose the first option (coated Fogra 39).

Now you have to rename your converted document.
I normally add xa to the name. There should be no red crosses visible in this window (see below).

If there are still red crosses in the conversion window, there may be major problems.
Go to File > export to > image > TIFF.

Now every page will separately saved as a TIFF file. TIFF files are pixels, while PDF files can be vector and pixels and layers. Pixels rarely give problems when printing. Go to the window where are your new TIFF files are located, put the window on ‘order by name’, select them all and use the quick actions (right mouse click in the finder, select your files) to create a new PDF.

Using crop marks is not recommended. Only if you have a text document that is not A4 or A5 you must use cropmarks. Do not forget to set the ‘increase gutter’ value in the Layout > booklet tab on a negative value of -0.14 mm.

For more detailed information about printing a book with or without cropmarks, go to the page https://ps.wdka.nl/wiki/Print_a_Booklet_with_the_Canon.

Do not staple more, to prevent a major paper jam.
If you made your magazine in another programme than InDesign, you should convert it to a PDF/X a:200. You can do that if you open your PDF in Acrobat. Go to edit > Preflight . Go to PDF/X and choose the first option (coated Fogra 39).

Now you have to rename your converted document.
I normally add xa to the name.

Making a printable PDF

To print a magazine, your document should have a total amount of pages which is decidable by four. So the smallest magazine is 8 pages, then comes 12, 16, 20, 24 and so on. The Canon c600i printer can staple up to 24 pages, that is 6 sheets. Do not staple more, to prevent a major paper jam.

When using InDesign, save your document as a PDF/X a:2001. This PDF integrates all fonts and pictures, makes it CMYK and flattens it.

For magazines always save as separate pages. The Fiery Command Workstation software on our macs, PrintL and PrintR, will automatically order your pages if you use the “booklet” option. Page 1 should be your cover.

No InDesign?

If you made your magazine in another programme than InDesign, you should convert it to a PDF/X a:200. You can do that if you open your PDF in Acrobat. Go to edit > Preflight . Go to PDF/X and choose the first option (coated Fogra 39).

Now you have to rename your converted document.
I normally add xa to the name.

The fastest way to make a PDF from a JPG file is:
* right mouse / control click in Finder on your document and go to Quick Actions. Choose create PDF.
*For more control, read text below.
When making a PDF from Canva or Procreate, it is not always printable. To be sure it is printable, open the file in Acrobat. Go to Edit > Preflight. Choose the PDF/X version and then the first option. Click on Analyse and fix, change the name (I always add XA to the name). If red crosses appear, your file was not printable, but probably fixed now.

To print a magazine, alway export single pages, never spreads. Be sure the total amount of pages is dividable by four. So: 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 pages. If you have more pages, consider glue binding of hand binding. The official way to handle all pictures you placed in your InDesign document is to have the originals in approximately the right size and changed to 300 dpi.
For thin paper (100-160 grams) you start with PRESETS.
120 gram A4 and A3, 160 gram and 100 gram green label are already in the machine,
For paper from our own collection (drawer 1 - drawer 22) you start with the PAPER CATALOG.
4. Adding paper manually
If you bought paper somewhere else, beware of three aspects of the paper: the weight, the size and if it is glossy or matte. Try to find the most similar paper in our own paper selection, using our paper catalog. If there is no such paper in our drawers, go to Media Type and find the right description there.

- Make sure to check the package of you paper for the weight of the paper:
The Canon C600i can print on up to 300 grams paper.
- Upload your pdf 2001 file as always into the Fiery Command workstation Held folder and double click your file to open the properties/setup window. Select MEDIA in the left column.

1. Manually select the multi-purpose tray as paper source and chose your paper size.
2. Instead of using the paper catalog, you use the media type menu to select the weight of your paper.

For matt paper use the “heavy” settings, for glossy and coated paper use the “2-sided coated” settings.

When in doubt ask the station instructor for help.

5. printing a magazine
You need to have a PDF (PDF/X: a:2001) with single pages, so no spreads.
Preferably a total amount of pages that is devidable by 4, so 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 etc.
Otherwise you will have blank pages in your magazine.
Drag it to the held folder and choose a Preset that begins with Booklet.
The standard setting is for a "self cover" magazine. Then the cover is the same paper as the rest.
If you have less or as much as 24 pages (= 6 sheets), you can have it stapled by the machine. Go to "Finishing" and choose "Saddle Stitch". With all the presets you can click Print now and the complete magazine falls out of the machine, only the "Booklet_manual_Feed" asks for more settings.

Booklet on other paper than the papers already in the Canon printer
You can choose paper from our collection (drawers 1-22) or even buy your own paper somewhere else. In these cases you have to pick the right paper from the Paper Catalog or pick a Media Type. Do not forget to Define Cover in the Layout Menu. The printer will first print the cover, also when it is a self cover. So when you cover is a separate document, you also have to go to "Define Cover". For stapling, see above.

Gluebinding
When you want a gluebinded book, ask us to turn the machine on. That will take at least a half hour.
You can use the booklet function as well, but now turn off the folding and stapling in Finishing. You can cut the printed sheets in half and make one pile. Remember that, if you have a lot of pages (<100) you need a spine in your cover. Make two carves with a folding bone for the spine. In the glue binder, the line close to the back of your cover should align with the arrow on the glue binder where you put your cover.
You can also print on A4 if you are making an A4 booklet. Now you have to cut off the paper on the left side before glue binding. It is cheaper though to print on A3 and cut in half. To be save, print the booklet smaller than A4 (95% or lower) so there is still a flexible margin for the cover.

6. avoid paper jams
It will happen!

But when you follow these rules, you can avoid or minimise the paper jams.

1. Do not mix up Clear Film with Tracing Paper.
2. Put at least 10 sheets more than you are printing in the multi purpose tray.
3. Let the pile of paper breathe. Take the ends, hold firm and twist a little. Now some air gets in between the sheets to prevent them to get stuck to another sheet.
4. Do not print double sided on paper thicker than 250 grams. Glossy goes fine, Greenlabel not. If it gets stuck more than two times in a row, print your paper twice single sided.
5. Glossy 115 A3 with a full black print on it will get stuck frequently in the fuser. Maybe because the machine heatens up too much there. Wait a minute before trying again. Do not print a lot of very black images full size A3 directly after each other.
6. Do not let the printer staple more than 6 sheets 120 grams (24 page magazine), 4 sheets 160 grams, 2 sheets 250 gram.
7. With 'YOUR OWN PAPER' we try twice. So if it does not print after the second try, or it gets jammed, we skip your paper.
8. Textured aquarel paper will be likely to jam. Also already rolled up paper or damaged paper.
9. Do not print paper that is not cut properly. A paper that is 21 cm X 28 cm will jam if you send it as an A4.

At the printer's paper tray

Put your paper in the multi-purpose tray and close the slides until the printer recognises
your paper size.
Press change at paper type.

To find the paper type menu you need for your own paper, select standard paper type in the drop-down menu on the left.

Use the menu to select the same paper type you selected in the printing program.
Press ok twice and you are ready to go.

* drag your pdf from the desktop to the line called "Held"
* double-click your file to open the options window

2. Fill in the Quick Access
Fill in the fields according to your design

For thin paper (100-160 grams) you start with PRESETS.
120 gram A4 and A3, 160 gram and 100 gram green label are already in the machine,
we named the trays 1,2,3 and paper deck
For paper from our own collection (drawer 1 - drawer 22) you start with the PAPER CATALOG.
if you brought your own paper, use MEDIA TYPE and find a description that suits.
1. How many copies do you need?
2. choose your desired paper-size (A4, A3)
3. what kind of paper would you like to print on?
- The numbers in the paper catalogue match the numbers on our paper drawers.
- Media type will automatically change.
4. The orientation, or 2-sided printing has to be chosen. You can choose between Short Edge and Long Edge.
Landscape files should be Short Edge
Portrait files should be Long Edge.
3. Send to Print
- click 'OK' to save your setting
- if the printer is free you can click "print"
