Publisher:All-in-One Publishing proposal

From Publication Station

Research Question

What are the capabilities and limitations of HTML and CSS as a source format for publishing on multiple media: mobile devices, personal computers, e-readers and paper?

Relevance

Once upon a time, designers could get away with designing only a printed publication. Nowadays, most publications have to be designed not only for print, but also for computers, phones, tablets, ereaders and all kinds of other new media.

Designing all of these publications separately can take a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Fortunately, there is a way to design one document that can be used for publishing on all of these media, old and new!

Process

Research through experimentation will happen on friday mornings from 8:30 to 11:00 from april 10th until june 12th in collaboration between Arjen Suijker and Lucia Dossin.

Outcome

Our experiments will culminate in a CSS/HTML based design for a publication. This publication will come from a single source. This source should contain all the formatting information that is needed to make it accomplish its communicative and aesthetic goals on a broad array of different media:

-print

-phones

-tablets

-desktop pc's

-e-readers

This design will serve as the basis for three open courses. After presenting our results to students during these open courses, they wil implement our findings in their own projects. A description and the planning of the open courses can be found here: [].

The results and the process will be documented here: All-in-One_Publishing_documentation. This documentation will consist of reports on the choices that were made, problems that were encountered, potential solutions, implemented solutions, possibilities and constraints, future trends and developments.
