Ik heb Jan Toorop, 'De Nieuwe Generatie' gekozen als kunstwrk uit het boijmans. Dit deed ik puur op intuitie, het schilderij trok me erg aan. Later moesten we ontleden wat we bijzonder/mooi/lelijk/belachelijk aan het werk vonden. Wat me het meeste trok is dat je zoveel kunt ontdekken in het schilderij. Dat het van bijna abstractie langzaam steeds meer figuratief wordt omdat je meer ziet. Hier wou ik graag op in spelen voor mijn transformatie.
Een schilderij uit zijn omgeving, het museum, trekken en er iets van stelen deed me denken aan walter benjamin theory over de aura van een kunstwerk. Benjamin stelde aan de aura van een schilderij 3 voorwaardes.
- singularity, het moet op 1 plek te bekijken zijn.
- authenticity, is het het echte werk? van het juiste materiaal? en klopt het historisch gezien?
- authority, welke rituelen en gebruiken komen er bij kijken? Bijvoorbeeld bij schilderijen van heiligen etc...
En wat vind ik zelf van het 'jatten' van iemands werk? Benjamin zag het reproduceren als iets positiefs, het werk verliest misschien zijn aura maar wordt wel door veel meer mensen bekeken. Het heeft een soort democratiserende werking. Ik denk zo lang je duidelijk blijft verwijzen welk werk je hebt gebruikt doe je het goed.
Ik wou graag wat doen met de verschillende lagen van het schilderij en de mysterieuze sfeer. De manier waarop ik steeds nieuwe dingen kon ontdekken. Zelf dacht ik meteen aan animatie omdat je zo stilstaande beelden kan laten leven. Ik heb nog naar wat kunstenaars gekeken die schiderijen animeren of met schilderijen animeren.
Hier vond ik Rino Tagliafierro en eerder heb ik al Loving Vincent gezien.
Door het schilderij van Toorop in verschillende photoshop lagen te zetten en daarna in after effects los van elkaar te animeren en daarna weer samen in after effects 3d lagen te zetten was het heel goed te doen om de animatie voor elkaar te krijgen. Mijn intentie was om dit als copy te maken maar achteraf was het meer een transformatie. Ik kreeg de feedback om de animatie langzamer om zo telkens mensen te laten gissen of het stilstaand beeld is of dat er beweging is. Ik vond zelf dat toen ik de film 5 minuten had gemaakt dat het veel verloor. Daarom heb ik ervoor gekozen de snelle versie te behouden.
Het schilderij van Toorop heet de nieuwe generatie omdat het gaat om nieuwe technologie, te zien aan de telegram paal links in het beeld. Maar ook vanwege zijn nieuwe generatie, zijn 1 jarige dochtertje Charley staat in het midden afgebeeld. Dat laatste heeft een sterkere betekenis gekregen door de jaren heen: Charley werd kunstenares, haar zoon Edgar werd kunstenaar en zijn zoon Rik is nog steeds kunstenaar.
Mijn transformatie was toen af maar ik had nog geen copy. Hierbij moest ik me op één aspect van het schilderij focussen en proberen dit na te maken / toe te eigenen. Ik koos voor de weerspiegeling van het water en het bos. Toen ben ik sochtends om half 5 naar het bos bij mijn ouders gefietst en heb ik daar gefilmd en foto's gemaakt. Helaas was het behoorlijk mistig maar ook dit heeft zijn voordelen, het speelt namelijk erg in op het mysterieuze effect.
Graag wil ik mijn beide films naast elkaar op het plafond projecteren. Dit omdat dat bij het thema van mystiek en ontdekken van mijn groepje past omdat we allemaal op zintuigen prikkelen en verborgenheid inspelen. Ook heb ik gelui opgenomen in het bos wat ik wil laten horen tijdens het tonen van de films.
1. What is the theme i am investigating? This was was kind of given to us, the fantastic forgeries theme.
2. What is my research question? Can I give my spectators a simelar experience as if they are looking at the actual painting?
3. How am I structuring my research? I find this one difficult for such a short period of time. But if i would do this project over a longer period i would first look at what people look at first, second etc. and include this in the sequence in wich i am animating.
4. What tools and methods will I use to conduct my research? The internet and just trial and error.
5. What is the foreseen result? Jan Toorops De nieuwe generatie brought to life.
6. What is the difference between my foreseen result and my actual result? Yes.
7. Is it relevant? First I struggled with this. I focussed mostly on what my final product would look like and not so much on the relevance but it actually is. Jan Toorop is the first in line of a big artist family. His daughter Charley depicted in the painting became a painter herself. Her son Edgar became a painter and his son Rik Fernhout is one to and he is still alive. Jan Toorop called this painting De nieuwe generatie, not knowing he himself would start a generation of painters. His latest generation is still alive. I wanted to give de nieuwe generatie a reboot because the painting is called that way as the painting revolves around new technology. But now I am thinking about sending my video to Rik Fernhout because it would bring it back full circle in my opinion.

Off course animation, my medium of choice, is often considered with new technology. The images we can produce now with advanced 3d software are amazing and really high tech. But animation is not only that, it started by just pencil drawings and it developed further and further. I like walking the line between analogue and digital. I think my digital craft project does exist somewhat on that line. The way I got to give the painting something new gave me great joy and is something that i would definitely like to continue. My craft in relation to newer technologies is that I took an oil painting and digitialised by taking a picture of it. The picture I imported in to my computer, slicing all layers of the painting lose from each other in photoshop. The photoshop layers I imported in after effects and placed them in 3d layers. I did this because I wanted to use an older technique: that of the multiplane camera. The multiplane camera has multiple planes :) that can move individually in front of the camera to give the illusion of depth. Now I did not make my own multiplane camera (would love to do it sometime) but I did create the same effect by digitalising the process in to after effects. I am not a person that says that everything used to be better, neither am I the person that sees only the good in the future. The unexpected places where they meet are my favorite. New technologies give new options and new ways to express yourself but they are not always better ways to express or show what you want to make. My craft gives me all the options I can dream of. I can animate in 3d with the newest programs or go back to the basics with traditional pose to pose animation and I don’t want to only choose one. My craft lays wherever I want in to be in relation to newer technologies.
The way i presented my films was by placing them in one film and looping that every 30 seconds. I projected them on the ceiling and had a speaker with sounds I recorded in the forest playing. I did not think through why i wanted it projected on the ceiling. It was for one practical because of the limited space. I had hoped it would draw more attention to my work if it was placed differently than normal. But Ivan made a very insightful comment that if my work was interesting enough people would no matter look at it. So I could have thought it out better.
My beamer i placed in a bin because that way it could still vent. First i did not do it and it got overheated.
